Driftwood Beach, Georgia

What do Hawaii and Florida both have in common? Great beaches! Joining that list is Georgia! Coming in at number 6 on Trip Advisor’s top 25 beaches list is a lesser-known, but very majestic location called Driftwood Beach. Driftwood Beach is located in the Golden Isles of Georgia on Jekyll Island.

Driftwood Beach used to be a Maritime forest, but it has transformed into a sandy beach covered with branches and tree trunks that resemble driftwood after decades of erosion.  Although Driftwood is a popular destination, it is still able to maintain that “hidden gem” feel that I love.

It is not uncommon to see weddings, engagements, and family photos taking place at Driftwood Beach because the scenery is so unique. I love to go there to work on my photography skills or lack thereof. Even the most novice photographer is able to get some good photos at Driftwood because the natural beauty is very forgiving to the camera. I have seen several photographers out there with fancy cameras (they must really know what they are doing), but I have been able to capture some magical moments with just the camera on my phone. Even when I can’t get the kids to focus long enough to take a picture, I can still enjoy the beautiful background scenery.

Kids will most likely see Driftwood Beach as a big natural playground. My kids love to climb on, over, and under the stumps and limbs while exploring the area. It’s fun to watch their imaginations run wild as they reconnect with nature. They also love to play in the small tide pools and search for small types of marine life, shells, and weathered rocks that can be found scattered around the beach.

Driftwood Beach also touts itself at being one of the most romantic beaches in the area in case you are looking for a date night or weekend away. Driftwood is not your normal swimming, boogie boarding, and lounge chair relaxing kind of beach, but rather it is more of a special and unique landmark in the area and that makes it worth a visit. Don’t forget to bring your camera!
